Mt Remarkable Summit Trail

“In search of Mt Remarkable” – named by Edward John Eyre in 1839 as recognition of the lofty way it towered above the surrounding hills, I recently set off for Melrose, and a trek to the Summit. And for those who have previously completed the 12.2km trek up and then down the north-eastern side of Mt Remarkable along the Heysen Trail, over the large oceans of scree there have been some changes.
Firstly the 6.1km trek ascent has been extended to 6.5km following a slight re-route near the top to avoid overlapping the fire track, and to provide some alternative views to the west.
And secondly, an all-new 7.5km trail has been added to the south-eastern side of Mt Remarkable, thus offering an opportunity to create a 14km long loop, as I did. The ‘southern summit trail’ offers some outstanding views of the Main Street of Melrose, and across the MTB trails to the southeast and towards Bartagunyah Wines. And with a much desired added plus, this southern trail encounters small amounts of scree, thus reducing ankle rolls and enabling a greater appreciation of the stunning vistas.
All in all, a great hike to the 960m high Summit which is covered by a growing rock cairn, an old Trig, and a multitude of trees and bushes masking many of the views.
